The underlying mechanisms that change our state of consciousness are the same in all three categories. All of them require us to soften or dissolve our normal ego structures and move from separation towards non-dual unity states. These mechanisms pre-date our childhood and our cultures but get expressed through our personalities and cultural rituals. 

Psychedelics famously loosen the grip of our egos and quieten our default mode networks so we can perceive ourselves, each other and reality from a whole new perspective. So much so that they are now almost mainstream because of their positive effect, with many places in the world making psychedelic-assisted therapy a legal pathway to experience these benefits.
