The 3 Paradoxes of Desire

Sexual version: I must follow my desire compass to become aroused and sexually satisfied but how can I do that without harming myself, my lover or the fabric of society?

Non sexual versions include: I must follow my desire compass to find my way home to wholeness, but how can I do that without harming myself, my loved ones and the greater good?

Paradox 1: Self versus Self

The tension between ego defending my sense of self and desire dissolving that sense of self. Here we move from “I” to “We” — and sometimes into The All — touching the two-become-one flow of being at One with Life.

Paradox 2: Self versus Lover/Other

The friction between my desires and my lover’s desires.Each person’s erotic wiring is unique, yet turn-on requires both of us to follow our desire. The paradox: how do we walk both paths at once?

Paradox 3: Self versus Collective

My desire versus the greater good. The pull of personal desires against the weight of traditions, rules, and social norms that hold group cohesion.This operates on two levels: the social (belonging, rules, culture) and the existential (where I fit in the cosmic order).

Generative Paradox

Long before Brené Brown published Strong Ground, and talked about the tension of paradox, Artemisia de Vine taught that generative paradox is the mechanism that creates a third new thing. That holding the tension of the paradox open, rather than collapsing it to one side or the other, is what breaks open new possibilities, and this is the very mechanism that makes the third flip work. It is the grammar of emergence itself and the source of human innovation, creativity, resilience, and solutions to conflict and challenges. It triggers the expansion of consciousness and is how anything truly new comes to be. Not by harmonising polarities but by the friction of paradox held open.
